A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” stated the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its duties in public projects. They were completed at an rapid pace, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked significant questions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party demanded an prompt halt in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed pending a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital initiatives.
